Glasshouse Theatre
Social Services Human RightsGlasshouse Theatre works at the intersection of prison and the arts. Unique to this company is its foundations in the frontline experiences of Prison Officers, coupled with a dedication to using theatre as a tool for social change. Glasshouse's work specialises in the use of theatre as a therapeutic tool to educate others and critically examine social injustice. This is achieved using a combination of theatre productions and workshops in prisons & the community, with people incarcerated, their families and young people.
In the community
Glasshouse runs theatre workshops and discussion groups to raise awareness and support those whose lives have been impacted by prison. They work with children and young adults facilitating trauma informed sessions exploring the impact of our prison system, and the systemic injustices it relates to – including patriarchy, racism and poverty. Glasshouse Theatre facilitate a safe creative space where the ideas around punishment, rehabilitation and justice can be re-imagined.
In prison
Glasshouse also creates safe, creative spaces within prison to allow people incarcerated and their families to maintain positive connections and engage in imaginative play. During visit days, where families see their loved ones who are in prison, Glasshouse facilitates drama games, puppetry, arts and storytelling. They also deliver theatre programmes and projects built for people in prison, to explore the arts and use theatre as a tool for healing. These programmes use theatre to unpick the role of gender and oppression, whilst creating safe, joyful spaces for people incarcerated to build confidence and positive peer bonds. These projects are currently in development and will aim to be rolled out in 2024.
